Kerr Lake State Recreation Area

Created in 1779, the county is named for Joseph Warren, a Revolutionary War patriot mortally wounded at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

The county seat is Warrenton.  Other communities include Macon, Norlina, Ridgeway, Vaughn, Wise, and part of Littleton.

Warren County’s land area is 428.70 square miles; the population in the 2010 census was 20,972.

Kerr Lake State Recreation Area

Between 1946 and 1952, a dam was constructed across the Roanoke River in Virginia, just a few miles above the North Carolina state line.  The John H. Kerr dam helped prevent destructive flooding down river, and the resulting reservoir, named for the Tarheel Congressman who played a key role in its development, has provided recreational activities galore.  Numbers tell a lot about the Kerr Lake State Recreation Area.  The lake covers 50,000 acres with more than 800 miles of shoreline.  The North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation maintains seven distinct areas:  Bullocksville, Henderson Point, Hibernia, Nutbush Bridge, and Satterwhite Point in Vance County; and County Line and Kimball Point in Warren County. Camping is king at Kerr, with hundreds of tent and trailer campsites – 652 to be exact – available for weekly rental.  Each site has a picnic table, fire pit, and tent pad.  Slightly more than half have electric hookups.  Restrooms, hot showers, playgrounds, and dump stations are near each campground area.

Activities at the recreation areas at Kerr Lake are naturally centered on the water.  Satterwhite Point has a designated swimming area with changing rooms and restrooms.  Personal flotation devices are loaned at Satterwhite Point, Henderson Point, Hibernia, and Kimball Point.  All areas except County Line have at least one boat ramp.  Two commercial marinas, including one at Satterwhite Point, offer mooring, slips, service and supplies year-round.  Conditions for sailing are ideal at Kerr Lake, especially in the expansive bodies of water around County Line, Henderson Point, and Kimball Point.  Short nature trails are found at Bullocksville, Hibernia, and Satterwhite Point.  Headquarters for the Kerr Lake State Recreation Area are at Satterwhite Point, north of Henderson in Vance County.  252-438-7791
